Urban League: A Ranked Ballot Debate

April 20, 2017 — 7 - 8:30am

DESCRIPTION
London is exploring the option to use Ranked Choice Voting (a ranked ballot system) for the 2018 Municipal Election. If council decides to move ahead London will be the first municipality in Canada to use this system.

Many Londoners are still unclear about the concept of ‘Ranked Choice Voting’ though, so the Urban League has decided to bring two voices – one for and one against – together for a night of open conversation.

Promoting the ranked choice approach will be Dave Meslin. Dave is the Creative Director of Unlock Democracy Canada. He has spent the last 15 years researching and advocating for electoral reform, including trips to Cambridge, Massachusetts and Minneapolis to witness ranked ballot elections.

Presenting an opposing position will likely be Sandy Levin. Sandy is a former City Councillor and a long time community activist. He has served as chair of The Urban League of London and The London Transit Commission, and on the Board of The London Public Library. He is currently on the Board of the The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, and is the President of the Orchard Park/Sherwood Forest Ratepayers.

Both speakers will have 10-15 minutes to make their case, and then we will open up the floor to conversation and questions.
