Brooklyn-based drummer and composer, Tomas Fujiwara’s résumé holds memberships in Taylor Ho Bynum’s Sextet and the cooperative avant-jazz/rock trio Thumbscrew. Since 2010, Fujiwara’s flagship ensemble, The Hook Up, has been projecting rhythmically upbeat melodies and advancing an aesthetic generally along the lines of Wayne Shorter, or the Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s: sleek, enigmatic post-bop, more suggestive than demonstrative, complicated but never random.

2016 saw the release of After All is Said, The Hook Up’s third album, emphasizing Fujiwara’s nuanced arrangements while honoring the dynamics of it’s virtuosic soloists: guitarist Mary Halvorson, tenor saxophonist Brian Settles, trumpeterJonathan Finlayson, and bassist Adam Hopkins.
