This edition of the LAVA Sunday Salon and Broadway on My Wind walking tour looks at the history of Fort Hill in Downtown Los Angeles and the ongoing restoration of the Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial (Kazumi Adachi and Dike Nagano, 1958). The largest bas-relief military monument in the United States, it honors the Mormon Battalion, the U.S. 1st Dragoons, and the New York Volunteers who raised the American flag over the fort on July 4, 1847, at the first Independence Day in Los Angeles.

We’ll begin in the lower level of Grand Central Market with an illustrated lecture on the history of Fort Hill by architectural historians Nathan Marsak and Richard Schave. This will include the Mexican-American War-era military Fort Moore, historic cemetery, notable residents, old Los Angeles High School, and Fort Hill’s sad fate when it was partially demolished for freeway construction.

The focus will then turn to the Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial, as Conservator Donna Williams and Civic Art Collections Manager Clare Haggarty talk about their roles on the Los Angeles County restoration project. We’ll then walk over to the Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial to tour the site and learn more about the monument and its restoration.
