The Harvard Club of BC hosts Harvard psychology professor Richard J. McNally in Vancouver to discuss “What is Mental Illness?”
Location: Mobify, 725 Granville, Pacific Centre, #420
Talk description: Epidemiologists report that nearly 50% of American adults have suffered from psychiatric disorders during their lives, reawakening controversy about the meaning of mental illness. In my talk, I cover the empirical, clinical, and theoretical issues bearing on our attempts to provide a valid means distinguishing mental disorder from mental distress. Among the approaches I cover are the evolutionary, social constructionist, and harmful dysfunction perspectives. Finally, I close by discussing the network conceptualization of mental disorder, a drastically new approach to understanding psychopathology that may transform our field.
Special guest speaker from Harvard University: Richard J. McNally, Ph.D., Professor and Director of Clinical Training, Department of Psychology, Harvard University
