Feb 25, 2009: LIFT09 at International Conference Center (CICG)

Lift is a series of events built around a community of doers and thinkers who get together in Europe and Asia to explore the social consequences of new technologies. Each conference is a chance to turn changes into opportunities by anticipating the major shifts ahead, and meeting the people who drive them.

We were told the future would be about mechanization, computerization, 3D flying virtual assistants, 1984-like nightmares or Asimov-inspired robots. The long-praised "21st century" itself was meant to be futuristic according to researchers and sci-fi writers. What did and did not happen? What can we learn from the predictions that never materialized to better look at the future?

Lift09 (Geneva, 25-27 Feb. 09) will look back to look ahead, exploring topics like change, solidarity, love, or design, during three days of intense networking and inspiration.

Dec 9, 2008: Cafe Scientifique: The ultimate fate of the Earth? at The Quadrant

Robert Smith (University of Sussex)

"In 7,590 million years the Sun will have evolved to become a red giant star, whose radius will be comparable to the current radius of the Earth's orbit around the Sun: I shall discuss what that will do to our Earth. The Earth will actually be too hot for habitation much sooner than that -- but still some 1,000 million years into the future from purely astronomical considerations. We shall also look at some of the problems that humanity needs to overcome to survive for even 1,000 centuries"

7:30 for 8pm start.

Meetings are FREE (although a contribution to expenses is appreciated)

Nov 24, 2008: Developing and demonstrating your reputation with Julia Chanteray at The Werks

Why do some people seem to get all the interesting projects to work on, and be able to easily go from one project to the next?

Why are some people able to charge higher daily rates than others?

Julia Chanteray from The Joy of Business thinks that this is because these seemingly lucky people have been able to develop a great reputation in their area – they are desirable, hot property. She’ll be talking about how you can make yourself into hot property too, by developing your reputation for great work, and getting the word out about just how good you are. Julia will talk about how our work reputation is formed, why people think of us in certain ways, and what we can do to demonstrate reputation in the areas we want.

Julia has spent her life setting up and running different businesses and now helps other people to make money, do great work, and have fun while they’re doing it.

Mar 16, 2009: The Great British Booze-up at Shakespeare's Pub

The Great British Booze-up is back for its third year, and this time it's personal.

Those lovely guys from Clearleft and Get Sign Off have put some money behind the bar and will be treating our American cousins to a good old fashioned knees-up. After a hard day conferencing you're gonna be famished, so we'll also be sorting out food. But don't worry, you won't be forced to eat shepherds pie or jellied eels. Instead. we've got another one of our legendary Mexican buffets. So get there early, as it won't last long. And all this to a soundtrack of great British tunes, straight from the mixmaster himself, DJ Clagnut.

Yummy food, choppa choons and lashings and lashings of tasty beer. What more could you ask for?

Feb 11, 2009: Low Tide Bike Ride - DETAILS TBC at Brighton Marina

Note: This is an evening ride, starting from Brighton Marina!

Fun cycle dash over the exposed sand flats during one of the lowest tides of the year. The ride goes from Brighton Marina to the King Alfred Centre in Hove and beyond (note different details to recent rides!), or as far as you and your bike can make it.

The ride will set off 15-30 minutes after meeting, so as to catch the lowest tide (6:45pm, 0.4m) and the sunset (5:09pm).

Following August 2007's Low Tide Naked Critical Mash-Up bike ride, the event is clothing-optional.

Time and tide wait for no-one, so if you can't make it to the start, join us en route.

We often go for a skinny-dip in the sea at the end of the ride.

Bring bikes, waterproofs, warm clothes, towels and lights. Remember to thoroughly wash the salt and sand off your bike afterwards. If you're worried about using your own bike, pick a scrap one up from a skip.

Previous rides have taken place on:

Many website owners see usability as one of the key value generators for 2008 as the cost of acquiring traffic continues to grow.

This seminar aims to give a solid background on what is a wide and varied subject through using case studies and examples from several e-commerce and non-commercial websites. Importantly it will provide hands-on experience through workshops on the key principles of usability and will inspire attendees to add value to their own websites when they return to the workplace.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
Anyone who has a role to play in website conversion and wants to understand the principles and how to apply best practices. It is suitable for client or agency staff but we would expect some previous experience of website terminology.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
• Introduction - the importance of usability for online success
• Usability definition, standards and commercial benefits
• Overcoming barriers to implementing usability
• Calculating conversion and the revenue impact of usability

Usability design principles
• The key usability principles to be considered in the design of navigation, homepages, page layout, forms and error messages in the usability experience
• Checkout, registration and form design best practices to finalise the transaction and maintain trust throughout
• Looking to the future: usability in Web 2.0 sites and rich internet applications
• Workshop in using card sorting techniques to inform a site's navigational structure

The usability lifecycle
• How you can integrate usability activities throughout the website design process, applying practical techniques based on relevant usability standards such as ISO 13407 Human-centred design processes for interactive systems
• Practical usability methods including persona and scenario creation, rapid prototyping, creating usability metrics, and an overview of usability analysis and testing
• Workshop applying informal usability assessment and testing methods

Jun 6, 2009: Brighton Naked Bike Ride at The Level

Every June, in cities around the world, people ride bikes naked to celebrate cycling and the human body. The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against oil dependency.

Be there, as bare as you dare!

2009 will see the fourth annual Brighton ride, following its massive success last year, when 400 people rode through the heart of the city. It will be a morning ride, finishing around 1.30pm. Riders will also be able to join the London and other UK rides.

The plan is to set off at around 11.30am, cycle around Brighton & Hove city, and finish at Black Rock naturist beach around 1-1.30pm for a sea swim and beach picnic.

There will also be pre-ride body painting from 10am.

Planning meetings to discuss the ride's organisation and promotion will be held on the last Friday of every month prior to the event, between January and May.
