Every day, 24,000 children die of preventable causes and UNICEF takes action to reduce that number to zero. Guatemala has one of the worst nutritional conditions in Latin America. Nearly 23 percent of children over three months and under five years of age suffer from general malnutrition, while almost one-half suffer from chronic malnutrition. UNICEF distributes micronutrient supplement powders that are designed to be sprinkled over food, instantly fortifying the meal with iron, vitamin A, Zinc, vitamin C, and folic acid. For $3.50 UNICEF can provide a child with fortified nutrition for one year. This is a low cost, simple and highly effective intervention that can help make enormous strides towards unacceptably high rates of child mortality.
