The Phenomenal Human Brain October 6, 2008

Let’s kill the immaterial soul once and for all and bring our understanding of the brain and the mind to the 21st century: Machine-brain interactions, the brain in health and disease, the enhancement of brain function, the evolution of complex minds from simple animals,learning and memory, the subjectivity of time, the first generation of truly intelligent robots, … and yes, the “hard question” too.

The good news is that for every confused theologian there is a neuroscientist keen on explaining these latest advances. With so much going on in the so-called “Century of the Brain”, efforts are being made within the neuroscience community to reach out to interested audiences. Humanists acknowledge the need to approach modern challenges with updated information and are probably the most interesting adult audience a brain scientist can wish for.

My name is Roger Redondo and I am a neuroscientist working at the University of Edinburgh on Learning and Memory. I am also a science communicator engaged developing and conducting neuroscience workshops aimed at children and adults. I am very proud to have the opportunity to give the HSS-EG my interactive talk on “The Phenomenal Human Brain”. Join me at 7:30 pm on Monday, 6th of October (Quaker Meeting House) for a one hour talk followed by discussion and Q&A time. There will be at least one game that will teach how your brain records and remembers locations but you will have to be on time in order to participate.
