Robert Fairlie, professor of economics at the University of California (Santa Cruz), will discuss his topical new book, Race and Entrepreneurial Success, in which he examines recent racial disparities in business performance. Why do Asian-American owned firms perform better than white-owned businesses? Why do African-American owned firms tend to be less successful? Access to financial capital is found to be the most important determinant of success among entrepreneurs. Drawing on a rarely used, restricted-access dataset compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau, the book explores additional explanations for why some entrepreneurs are successful and others are not.
