The Stanford Department of Music will host its second international symposium inviting renowned musicians and scholars to explore the vivid styles of performance heard on the earliest recordings and player piano rolls. This unique gathering of performers, musicologists, composers, and enthusiasts will celebrate a Golden Age of performers on records and film. The symposium will explore styles that began to vanish with the First World War, the roots of these styles in the nineteenth century, and present day responses and reactions. This will be a forum for experiment and dialogue - should we (can we!) revive these lost approaches for performance today and in the future?

Presentations and performances by Charles Rosen, Joseph Horowitz, Robert Philip, Will Crutchfield, George Barth, Jonathan Bellman, Sandra Rosenblum, David Breckbill, Allan Evans, Rex Lawson, Denis Hall, Jonathan Summers, Jerry McBride, David Milsom, Rebecca Plack, Kumaran Arul, Genadi Zagor, Jeffrey Trevino, Robert Huw Morgan, William Cheng.

Events will include eight concerts, lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations of historic phonographs from the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound, an improvisation contest, and world premieres of newly discovered audio and video documents of historic performers. The symposium begins the afternoon of January 14th and ends with a Sunday evening concert by Rex Lawson on pianola. Distinguished scholar and pianist Charles Rosen will perform on Friday evening and will give a talk on Saturday morning. Distinguished author, Joseph Horowitz will be giving a talk on Friday afternoon. Friday midday concert will feature an improvisational contest between pianists on submitted themes from the audience. Friday evening's banquet with the presenters is open to the public. For registration, tickets and symposium details, visit the website at:
