Horst Hoheisel was one of the first artists in Germany to design public commemoratives that spoke to the Nazi past while turning away from the traditional conventions of the public monument. Later described as ?counter-monuments? by historian James Young, these public works speak of intimate public engagement in, and individual commitment to the act of remembering. Horst Hoheisel comes to the Bay area for the first time. He will speak on recent community memory projects in South America and other public projects Bay Area artists also working with memory and public space will join Horst. The evening?s discussion will be moderated by Mitchell Schwarzer, Chair of the Department of Visual Studies, California College of the Arts, and author of "Zoomscape: Architecture in Motion and Media."
