City Arts & Lectures will present an evening with
John Kerry & Teresa Heinz Kerry

During his 2000 Presidential campaign, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry often asked his audiences to, "measure me by my life. That's how you know that nothing that I'm saying to you is just words." Kerry was a decorated Mekong Delta swift-boat captain, an outspoken anti-war protestor, a determined prosecutor, and has been a dedicated U.S. Senator for over twenty years. During his four terms as Senator, Kerry has sponsored dozens of bills, addressing small business concerns, education, terrorism, veterans' and POW-MIA affairs, and marine resource protection. He has long championed environmental protection, specifically related to climate change, alternative energy sources, and fuel efficiency. Recently, the Senator led the filibuster to stop drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Teresa Heinz Kerry is reportedly one of the most philanthropic women in the world today. Chair of the Heinz Foundations, Heinz Kerry supports social and environmental causes, rating applicants not only by their efforts to solve national problems but by their business standards as well. She also strives to integrate high standards of environmentalism in her work, and her headquarters in Pittsburg were the city's first "green" offices. Born in Mozambique to Portuguese parents, Heinz Kerry is fluent in five languages. She first met her husband, John Kerry, at an Earth Day rally in 1990; they have been married since 1995. In 2003, Heinz Kerry received the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism for her work with the environment, health care, education, and family issues.

Together, Teresa Heinz Kerry and John Kerry have written This Moment on Earth: The New Pioneers on the Environmental Frontier (release date: 3/26). The Kerrys based the book on their travels across the nation, when they met with the individuals who are at the forefront of America's environmental protection.
