The earliest glassmakers—in Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and Egypt—reveled in the pliability of glass and in its ability to imitate precious stones. Using the techniques of metalworking and pottery production, they created objects and vessels of brilliant color and crystalline transparency. What was the attraction of glass for its early makers and users? How and where did invention and innovation occur? Janet Duncan Jones, associate professor and chair of the department of classics, Bucknell University, draws on her research at Gordion and elsewhere in the ancient world to discuss pivotal moments in the early evolution of glass production in the ancient world. Complements the exhibition Molten Color: Glassmaking in Antiquity.
