Eurosonic: ORKA January 15, 2010

Ever seen a band play harpabole? Or noisoline? A fence pole with a rope? Welcome to the homemade instruments of Orka, an experimental rock band who live on the Faeroe Islands. The solitude there suggests that music making doesn’t follow the beaten tracks. Orka picks up where Einstürzende Neubauten ends, even if angle grinder and cement mixer are also part of the musical process. Music that literally makes sparks fly. But Orka is more organic and melodic, and apart from the curiosity collection also put samplers and vocals into use on behalf of real quality songs, as also heard on the album ‘Livandi Oyda’. Catchy avant-garde, anyone?
