The annual tour by the Stanford Historical Society's Historic Houses Project offers rare glimpses into the history and architecture of Old Campus residential areas. This year's tour - Eclectic Houses of Lower San Juan Neighborhood - includes pre-World War II houses featured in the society's new publication, Historic Houses VI: Lower San Juan Neighborhood, Continued. The book, available for advance purchase and on the day of the tour, focuses on 26 houses in the lower portion of the San Juan neighborhood.

The tour will include two houses in Spanish eclectic style and two in Tudor style: a 1925 hillside house designed by Birge Clark with unusual Moorish arches and a formal rose garden; a 1926 house by Charles K. Sumner with extensive gardens, including a Spanish citrus orchard; a 1929 shingled house by Theodore W. Lenzen; and a favorite from a past tour, a 1929 Henry C. Collins design featuring the owner's elaborate model railroad layout.

Proceeds from the tour support the work of the Stanford Historic Houses Project, whose members are documenting early campus houses. In 2007, their work was awarded a Governor's Historic Preservation Award.

Tickets purchased by April 6 will cost $25 per person, or $40 for a ticket plus a copy of Historic Houses VI. After April 6 and on the day of the tour, tickets cost $30 and books cost $25. Mail a check (payable to Stanford Historical Society) to Stanford Historical Society, c/o Sweeney, P.O. Box 19290, Stanford, CA 94309. Advance tickets will be mailed. Books will be available on the day of the tour at the registration desk near Parking Structure 6, 560 Wilbur Way; free parking available there in A and C spaces.
