A unique urban adventure game

Saturday, Feb 11, 2006, 4:30 p.m. beginning at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco, located at the foot of Market Street

The Chinese New Year's Treasure Hunt is a unique team adventure game, an exercise in urban sleuthing played on the colorful streets of Chinatown, North Beach, and Telegraph Hill amid the excitement, noise and spectacle of the annual Chinese New Year Parade. Nearly two-thousand amateur gumshoes will explore obscure alleys and hidden lanes, solving clues created by local private eye Jayson Wechter.

Along the way they'll discover secret San Francisco, the hidden history, culture and artwork that most tourists (and many residents) are unaware of.

Pounding pavement once trod by pirates, miners, silver barons, crime writers and beatnik poets, treasure hunters will seek out strange landmarks, forgotten architectural delights and secret vestiges of San Francisco's glamorous past. The annual Chinese New Year Parade, with its dancing dragons, popping firecrackers, and half a million spectators, makes a colorful and noisy backdrop to the Hunt.

Familiarity with San Francisco geography is not required for solving clues; map-reading skills, a creative spirit, and the ability to work collaboratively with teammates are more important. Many clues relate to general knowledge, current events, the arts and popular culture.

The hunt takes place rain or shine, and is conducted entirely on foot. Prizes are awarded to the winning teams in each of three divisions (Beginner's, Intermediate and Master's) and to the teams with the most inventive names and costumes. Partial proceeds benefit Circus Center and the San Francisco Food Bank.

Complete details, including sample clues and solutions are available at www.SFTreasureHunts.com.

The cost is: $ 30 per person through Jan. 31; $ 35 from Feb. 1 - 10; 40 at the door; $ 10 for kids under 18.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.SFTreasureHunts.com, or by phone at 925-866-9599.

Just want to say that this is one of the most fabulous san francisco experiences one can have. Even if you don't play competitively, the Hunt takes you to all kinds of great places you would never know about, and you do it all while the madness of the parade is happening.
