Living the Legacy!

Northfield?s annual community-wide celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King will be held on Monday, January 16. This year?s event will be at St. Dominic?s Catholic Church in Northfield.

The theme of this year?s event will be ?Living the Legacy?. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with musical selections by the Carleton African Drumming Ensemble under the direction of Jay Johnson.

The program begins at 7:00 p.m. The Master of Ceremonies is Dr. Ron Linde, and Reverend Henry Doyle will give the benediction. Hudlin Wagner, Dean of Students at Carleton College, will give a brief presentation honoring the life and legacy of Rosa Parks.

This year?s featured speaker is Nathan Wolf Lustbader, the Consul of Mexico in Minnesota. The Consul has been a member of the Mexican Foreign Service since 1992, and has held positions at Mexican Embassies throughout the world. He has served as Deputy Chief of Cabinet for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was appointed to the position of diplomatic advisor for the Mexican President in 2003. The Consul held this position until he was recently designated to be the new Consul of Mexico in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The 2006 Human Rights Award will be presented to HealthFinders Collaborative of Rice County. HealthFinders is a multi-cultural and multi-city effort of over 75 residents from Rice County churches, associations, businesses and institutions committed to delivering solutions to health care resources for the growing number of uninsured children, families and individuals in our communities. HealthFinders Collaborative Inc. Board Co-Chairs Amy Harris and Nancy Ludescher will be present to accept the award.

Also included in this year?s celebration will be musical performances by the Northfield Youth Choir. The NYC Governors Choir, directed by Elizabeth Shepley, will present two musical selections during the program.

Refreshments will be served following the event.

The public is welcome to attend and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. Children are welcome!
