The Santa Monica Festival highlights the dynamic connection between the City’s communities, culture, business, environment and art. Now in its nineteenth year, celebrate Mother Earth and all moms this Mother’s Day weekend while indulging in guilt-free shopping from vendors featuring earth-friendly artistic wares. Eat fresh foods from an assortment of local eateries and participate in art workshops using recycled and repurposed materials. The festival, a near zero-waste event, goes to great lengths to reduce its impact on the environment and the community. Learn from an array of environmental organizations and experience an eclectic mix of music and dance that celebrates Santa Monica’s vibrant spirit.

This year, the festival offers myriad opportunities to create your own experience through one-on-one encounters that allows you to explore and learn in a dynamic, interactive and thoroughly engaging way. It’s real 3-D!

Elemental Strings is a youth orchestra for fourth and fifth grade string students in the Santa Monica community. Le by “La Clara,” this renown touring dance company erforms rarely seen and reconstructed historical Spanish classical and regional folk dances, and of course, the fiery, passionate Flamenco. A Human Library works like a traditional library, but instead of books, patrons can “check out” real people who answer questions, share personal viewpoints, or debate and discuss controversial issues. Choose from 12 human books and check them out for a 30 minute conversation in a private yet structures environment.

Green Cordel with SmART Schools
SmART Schools is a comprehensive, standards-based, arts centered, whole-school redesign program that provides ongoing opportunities for all students to appreciate, develop, and demonstrate skills, knowledge, and understanding in and through the arts.
On display at the festival will be the Green Cordel. A cordel is a 17th century Portuguese tradition of hanging personal or political poems or illustrations on a piece of string in public places. The Green Cordel showcases work created in response to environmental issues by students from SmART Schools: Edison Language Academy, John Muir Elementary, McKinley Elementary and Will Rogers Learning Community. Come create your own work to add to the cordel. Festival goers are encouraged to interact with the works by posting reflections, compliments or questions.

Santa Monica Museum of Art Workshop
Fundred Dollar Bill project by artist Mel Chin
Participate in this workshop that aims to remediate the environmental problem of lead soil content in New Orleans and other major cities in the U.S. Participants will color templates of 100-dollar bills, which will in turn be collected and submitted to the Smithsonian in the hopes that they will be presented to the steps of Congress.

Reusable Bag Design Workshop with the West LA Veterans and Rosie’s Girls
