The Winnipeg Zionist Initiative Lecture Series in association with CANADA SHELI is pleased to present Colonel (Ret.) Yoram Hamizrachi East speaking on the topic Hizbullah, Attack By Proxy – War In Lebanon – Lessons Learned. The lecture takes place 7:30 PM, Thursday, September 28, 2006, Berney Theatre, 123 Doncaster St.

SPEAKER BIO
Yoram Hamizrachi-East was born and raised in Jerusalem. He joined the IDF at the age of 16 and served in a paratrooper battalion during the years of his compulsory service. In 1967, serving as a reserve officer, Yoram fought in the battle to free Jerusalem.
In the early 70s, as a fierce civil war was raging in Lebanon, Yoram became involved in a special clandestine operation to support the Lebanese Christians. Shortly thereafter he was appointed commander of the eastern sector of south Lebanon where he fought alongside the Lebanese against the PLO and their Lebanese supporters. Following the 1978 Litani Operation Yoram became the first IDF officer to command the now defunct South Lebanon Security Belt stretching from Mount Hermon in the east to the Mediterranean in the west. He also organized the South Lebanese Army (SLA), a unit in which Christians, Shiite Muslims and Druze, fought side by side. Shortly before his departure from serving in south Lebanon the Lebanese army awarded him a special citation to express their gratitude. Yoram also worked closely with UNIFIL and at the time was described in a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) document as the most influential and well-informed Israeli officer on the Shiites in Lebanon. From the early years of his long, albeit intermittent, military career Yoram was wounded three times, first as a young soldier guarding the country against terrorist infiltrators and then twice during the 1978 Litani Operation as he fought alongside his Lebanese comrades.
During the years of his military service Yoram was posted by the IDF to a number of trouble spots around the world, among them – South Africa, Namibia and the border zone areas of Angola and Rhodesia (today’s Zimbabwe). Other areas where he was called to assist with his special expertise, and with what became known as his unique trade mark, were Iran, Turkey, Egypt and the Kurdistan mountain ranges. Yoram left the army in the early 80s at the rank of colonel and in 1982 he moved to Canada with his family.
